As of today, I'm saying goodbye to both Lifehacker and Gawker Media. It's been an amazing six years at Gawker, and I'm grateful for the time spent here.

I want to thank you, Lifehacker readers and my fellow Lifehacker editors, for letting me in your world of productivity. I've heard a whole lot about music and work and love and of course, poop. It's been invaluable. Where else can you learn how to deliver a baby with just a binder clip? Lifehacker. Dot com.

So what am I doing now?

I'm launching StoryBundle. It's a site that lets you pay what you want for a bundle of quality ebooks, similar to the indie games and Mac app bundles. Not only will StoryBundle choose quality books to feature (I'm always looking for new reads), but it will offer a fantastic deal (you can pay what you want). Plus, the vast majority of the proceeds go directly to the author, rather than to a publisher.

Interested? Head on over and check it out! And if you're a self-published author that's interested in getting your work featured, shoot me an email.

Again, I want to thank everyone for letting my words enter your eyeballs for the last six years. It's been a pleasure. And if you want more, you can follow me on Twitter, Google+ or Facebook.

Bye bye!

Jason Chen

Digital Shades

We've featured M83 before, but unlike Hurry Up We're Dreaming, Digital Shades Vol. 1 is a true ambient album. Pitchfork's review points out that ambient artist Brian Eno (whom we've also featured twice) seems to have played a major influence on Digital Shades.

A lot of these Work Sounds entries sound repetitive when I say that this or that album works perfectly in the background, gently tickling your brain while you work. Think of it like white noise, something to fill the emptiness so you're not distracted. If you want something more bombastic, hit up M83's other albums.

Their new iPhone and Android apps let you do all this on your phone.

The apps are downloadable right now from their respective stores/marketplaces, and the mere fact of logging in and typing in your access code (it gets sent to the email on your account) will put you on the beta list.

Once you're in, you can see and chat with your friends list, with all the messages being mirrored on your phone and on your desktop, if both are on. This way you can have a chat log waiting for you on your computer if you're out. Unfortunately you don't actually get push alerts outside of the app when someone talks to you (at least, I don't), which makes this not as useful as it could be. Definitely a feature Valve needs to add.

Beyond chats, you can also look at your friends' activity log (what games they bought, achievements they got), look at your Community Groups' announcements and messages (but you can't post), and browse the store for things to add to your wishlist. What's also neat is that you can actually make purchases from the phone itself, so if you can't get to a computer during a Steam sale, you can make sure you don't miss out.

Once Valve fixes these little bugs and adds the missing features, the Steam app for mobile will be a fantastic assistant for people who purchase and play games regularly on Steam.

But if you've jailbroken your phone, you can install SlyCam, from Cydia, to take photos from your Notification Center.

Once installed and activated, you'll get a new + icon in your Notification Center. Hit that, and a photo will be taken and saved to your Photo Stream, without any further indication that anything's happened. If you do want a miniature viewfinder, you can hit the power button to the left of the + button and one will pop up. Be careful, since having a viewfinder kind of defeats the purpose of secretly taking photos with your phone, if anybody is standing behind you.

Try not to use this for anything naughty.
